De Queen Elizabeth 2 maakte haar eerste overtocht naar New York in 1969. In 1992 is ze het laatste lijnschip op de Atlantische Oceaan, geen vervoermiddel meer maar een drijvende stad met 1500 passagiers. Een bemanning van 1200, onder wie kapitein Warwick, houdt haar dag en nacht draaiende. Van Southampton naar New York leven bijna 3000 mensen vijf dagen samen in een soort verstandhouding: eerst de onvoorspelbare oceaan, dan New York, ver weg als een Nieuwe Wereld.
