Em 1998, a Carnival, a maior companhia de cruzeiros do mundo, comprou a Cunard Line. Lá dentro, algumas pessoas ousaram propor um novo paquete na tradição da Cunard, para um mercado americano sempre à procura de novidade: o navio mais comprido, maior e mais caro alguma vez construído. Micky Arison, o arquiteto Stephen Payne, o designer de interiores Andrew Collier e o comodoro Ronald W. Warwick aceitam o desafio, e em Saint-Nazaire o Queen Mary 2 ganha forma.
