Robert van Gulik (1910–1967) was diplomaat, verzamelde Chinese luiten en bedacht rechter Tie, maar zijn eigen land herinnert zich hem nauwelijks. Rob Rombout reist van Nederland naar Indonesië, Japan, de Verenigde Staten en China, langs dagboeken, archieven en de mensen bij wie van Gulik nog altijd rondspookt. Ergens tussen biografie en detectiveverhaal smelten de man en zijn held samen.
