Robert van Gulik (1910–1967) fut diplomate, collectionna les luths chinois et inventa le juge Ti, mais son propre pays se souvient à peine de lui. Rob Rombout voyage des Pays-Bas à l’Indonésie, au Japon, aux États-Unis et en Chine, à travers des journaux intimes, des archives et les personnes que van Gulik hante encore. Entre biographie et roman policier, l’homme et son héros se confondent.
